Why does your basement flood?
A wet basement or crawl space can be caused by one or more of these common problems:
- Periodic high water tables
- Inadequate soil percolation
- Heavy hydrostatic pressure
- Cracked & eroding walls
- Poor clay soil conditions
- Improper surface drainage
- Porous walls
- Capillary masonry
- Underground streams
- Seepage from window wells
- Clogged down-spouts & gutters
In the sandy, low-lying areas of eastern Maryland, Delaware, and Southern New Jersey, water is always close to the surface. Wet clays in all these areas can hold water. In Pennsylvania, hidden aquifers can bring problems.
